The first major experiment of the evening was set up as follows without previous explanation to either [redacted] or [redacted] child. Both subjects were placed in a very deep trance state and while in this state the following instructions were given:...

TSD has initiated 144 projects relating to the control of human behavior i.e. [redacted] during the ten years of operation of the MKULTRA program. Twenty five (25) of these projects remain in existence at this time while a number of others are in various stages of termination.

Hypnotic Experimentation and Research, 10 February 1954

1.) A posthypnotic of the night before (pointed finger, you will sleep) was enacted. Misses [redacted] immediately progressed to a deep hypnotic state with no further suggestion. This was to test whether the mere carrying out of the posthypnotic would produce the state of hypnosis desired. Needless to say, it did.

2.) Miss [redacted] was then instructed (having previously expressed a fear of firearms in any fashion) that she would use every method at her disposal to awaken Miss [redacted] (now in a deep hypnotic sleep) and failing this, she would pick up a pistol nearby and fire it at Miss [redacted]. She was instructed that her rage would be so great that she would not hesitate to "kill" for failing to awaken. Miss [redacted] carried out these suggestions to the letter including firing the (unloaded pneumatic pistol) gun at [redacted] and then proceeding to fall into a deep sleep.

In working with Individual subjects, special attention will be given to dissassociative states, which can be induced and controlled to some extent with hypnosis and drugs.

Subject: Experimentation Programs Conducted by the Department of Defense That Had CIA Sponsorship or Participation and That Involved the Administration to Human Subjects of Drugs Intended for Mind-control or Behavior-modification Purposes.

ARTICHOKE is the Agency cryptonym for the study and/or use of "special" interrogation methods and techniques. These "special" interrogation methods have been known to include the use of drugs and chemicals, hypnosis, and "total isolation," a form of psychological control.

In closing, may I make one very significant point. The Russian literature is hard to get and carefully avoids any mention of the topic in question. Those Russian articles which I have been able to get leave no doubt about the fact that the Russian is just as conversive about the field of hypnotism as are we.

Frankly, I now distrust much of what is written by academic experts on hypnotism. Partly this is because many of them appear to have generalized from a very few cases; partly because much of their cautious pessimism is contradicted by agency experimenters; but more particularly because I personally have witnessed behavior responses which respected experts have said are impossible to obtain.
